Turrets have been around for a long time. The main reason for traverse on the cannon itself is armoring---it's difficult to effectively armor a two-axis turret, so the most common practice is to use a one-axis turret and rely on cannon traverse for elevation. In some applications where a wide field of fire is not essential, people may use hull-mounted cannons and rely on the cannon itself for azimuthal traverse as well.
